Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Mishima: Entrance to Mishima Station; Bando Shuka I as Mishima no Osen - Amusing kabuki scene by Toyokuni III featuring Bando Shuka I as the beauty Mishima no Osen, stopping a man charging at her by pushing her hand out against his head. She smiles as she calmly takes a toothpick from her mouth, not disturbed at all by the attacker. She is dressed as an otokodate or street knight, with a sword at her side and a shakuhachi flute tucked into the back of her obi, her hair styled similar to a man's topknot. Hiroshige's landscape above shows a large hill dotted with pine trees framing a view of the entrance to Mishima. A bridge leads over a river to the village, the lighted windows visible as the sun sets. An interesting print from this jointed designed Tokaido series, detailed with fine bokashi shading in the mountains and sky. A variant edition with a colored background.
