Description of the Punitive Campaign in Kagoshima: A Picture of the Headquarters at the Mouth of the Kumamoto River, 1877

Comments - Handsome scene of headquarters at the mouth of the Kumamoto during the campaign to punish the rebels in Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. General Saigo sits on a chair at right, wearing a plumed cap and a military uniform trimmed with braid and epaulets, surrounded by rebels. Imperial Army troops gallop along the rocky shore at left, waving Japanese flags overhead. An interesting design with vibrant color, fine bokashi shading in the night sky, and nice detail in the figures.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Tape remnants on reverse at sides from previous triptych attachment. Slight soiling, a few creases and stains, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
