Yomogyu, Chapter 15

Series; Fifty-four Chapters of the Tale of Genji

Fifty-four Chapters of the Tale of Genji - Beautiful Meiji era revisiting of Toyokuni III's 1851 - 1853 Genji series "Faithful Depictions of the Shining Prince." Each design illustrates a scene from a chapter in Murasaki's beloved "Tale of Genji," considered one of the greatest works of Japanese literature. Handsome views of court life and travel during various seasons are documented with a wonderful attention to detail, including luxurious fabrics and elegant architectural settings. These prints are beautifully drawn with fine line work and vibrant color. Lavishly printed in 1897 by Fukuda Hatsujiro, many subjects feature deluxe treatments, such as burnishing and embossing, which were not used for Toyokuni III's original edition, along with updated backgrounds. These attractive designs provide a terrific look at upper-class Japanese life during the time of Genji.
