A Fine Tokyo Reprint Collection

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Kobayashi Kiyochika - Because of his place in history and the changing times in Japan while he was active, Kiyochika is considered both the last important ukiyo-e master and the first noteworthy print artist of modern Japan. Kiyochika studied photography with a pioneer in the field in Yokohama, and also Western-style painting. Kiyochika's style combines Western-style depiction of light and shade with contemporary subjects such as brick buildings and street cars, reflecting the rapid modernization of Japan during the Meiji era. Kiyochika bridges the transition from Edo era ukiyo-e to Meiji woodblock prints.

View of Rainfall on Shin-ou-hashi in To-kei - Lovely view of Shin-Ohashi (New Bridge) in Tokyo on a rainy day. Gray clouds fill the sky with falling showers depicted in soft streaks down the sky above the gracefully arched bridge. The reflections of the pilings shimmer on the water below, which also reflects a soft peachy-pink light. A beauty strolls along the shore at right under a boldly patterned umbrella, a nice counterpart to the soft tones of the rest of the scene. A beautiful view with an interesting English title, suggesting a foreign audience for the original print.
