Akashi, Chapter 13: Hidari Jingoro, 1864 - Terrific kabuki scene of the sculptor Hidari Jingoro's wooden statue of a guardian figure coming to life, frightening off several policemen who stumble over themselves trying to escape. The young artist looks up with a worried frown, holding down a sculpture of a lion that seems to spring to life under his hand. The guardian looms behind him, snarling ferociously, while a dragon reaches out its claws towards one of the men. Wood shavings and carving tools are scattered at the artist's feet, and he grips a sort of axe in his hand. A dramatic, dynamic image, with wonderful wood grain detail in the sculptures. A fascinating subject.
