Kobayakawa Saemon Koretaka; Saito Musashibo Benkei - Terrific uncut page from a rarely seen Yoshitoshi series featuring two chuban designs. The top image shows Kobayakawa Saemon Koretaka in the countryside, encountering what appears to be the King of the Tengu, Sojobo. Tengu are winged spirits with bird-like beaks and claws, and one peers around the back of Sojobo, who glares angrily at the samurai. The elderly man's robes swirl about him as he rings a bell. Below, the warrior monk Saito Musashibo Benkei flings a wolf over the side of a cliff, with debris filling the night sky as the creature hangs in mid-air. A great design with two fascinating subjects from Japanese folklore.
