by Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)
Comments - Fantastic depiction of the samurai Inukai Genpachi battling Inuzuka Shino on the roof of the Horyukaku, a tower of Koga Castle. This scene illustrates a popular episode from the Edo era novel "Nanso Satomi and the Eight Dog Heroes." At left, Genpachi raises an iron truncheon above his head, a troubled frown on his face. His hair sticks up wilding atop his head, and his outer robe is trimmed with fringe that swings with his movement. At right, backed up to the edge of the tile roof, Shino thrusts his sword at his opponent with a grimace. Behind them, a large ornament called a shachihoko, a mythological creature with a tiger's head and the body of a carp, adds drama to the scene. A terrific, dramatic design with expressive figures and wonderful detail.
