Beautiful Court Ladies in Spring: A Performance of the Play Dojo-ji by the Kita School of Noh, 1880

Comments - Attractive triptych depicting members of the Imperial court watching a Noh theater performance of the play "Dojoji" at the Kita School of Noh. An actor kneels on the stage at left, cowering behind his kimono sleeve under a large green temple bell as the jealous beauty Kiyohime stares at him from under a robe draped over her head. The Meiji Emperor and Empress sit at right, surrounded by ladies-in-waiting, a cloth covered table in front of them. Three beauties at lower left accompany the performance with hand drums. Handsomely detailed with rich vibrant color. An interesting subject, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 27 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small losses at corners, small loss at edge, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases and marks. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
