The Korea Incident, 1882

The Korea Incident - Dramatic illustration of the Korean uprising of July 23, 1882, also known as the Imo Incident or the Korea Incident. Korean soldiers revolted, attacking the palace and government officials, along with the Japanese legation and military advisors. The crowd destroyed buildings, killed many government officials, and occupied Changdeok Palace. The Japanese minister to Korea, Hanabusa Yoshitada, and his staff were forced to flee the rioting mob in a small boat, and were rescued by the British ship "Flying Fish." Chikanobu did several triptychs depicting the heroic Japanese bravely fighting off their attackers or making their escape by boat, but we have never seen these subjects before. Some of these lively designs include deluxe publishing techniques such as burnishing, or a dusting of mica across the top of the sky. An interesting contemporary depiction of this historic event.
