Courtesans in the Yoshiwara, 1869

Comments - Handsome triptych of courtesans strolling through the Yoshiwara. An elegant oiran or high-ranking courtesan in the center is accompanied by her two young kamuro or child apprentices, with a servant holding an umbrella over her. She wears a blue violet outer kimono patterned with colorful blossoms and a white rooster with long tail feathers. The other women stand about and chat in front of a courtyard garden with a yellow fence, and people can be seen inside the teahouse beyond. Wonderful detail in this lively scene, including embossing in the white kimono trim and the rooster's feathers.
