Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Arajishi Otokonosuke Terumitsu, 1852

Comments - Bold kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the loyal retainer Arajishi Otokonosuke Terumitsu, who is guarding the young heir to the Date clan. The evil magician Nikki Danjo transformed himself into a rat to steal an incriminating scroll about a plot to overthrow the Date clan. Otokonosuke attacks the giant rat, striking it with his fan. Here, he grips the fan above his head, grimacing angrily. His red stage makeup and bushy sideburns add to his imposing appearance, his large frame filling the page. A great design, detailed with burnishing on the black lacquer handle of the fan and on the topknot.
