Kumagai Naozane and Taira no Atsumori at the Battle of Ichi-no-tani

Comments - Dynamic kabuki scene from a play about the Battle of Ichi-no-tani. At right, the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane gallops along the shore, gesturing angrily with his fan as he chases the young Taira samurai Atsumori, who can be seen trying to escape through the deep water on a dappled horse, gripping a bow in his hand. In the account that appears in "The Tale of the Heike," Naozane captures the samurai, preparing to behead him, when he realizes that he is a young Taira prince, the same age as his own son. With his troops rapidly approaching, he tearfully cuts off the boy's head, promising to say prayers for him. The tragic story of Atsumori's death in his first battle became the subject of many Noh and kabuki plays. Terrific detail in the armor and horse equipment, with a bold composition.
