Great Assembly at Kamakura, 1858

Comments - Terrific print depicting a gathering of noblemen for an audience at a daimyo's palace in Kamakura. Wearing voluminous formal court robes and tall black caps, the noblemen are seated around the room, waiting patiently. The daimyo sits on a platform at right, with young attendants gathered around him. Each samurai is carefully identified with a name cartouche. Wonderful detail in the elegant interior setting, with beautiful sliding screens depicting cranes and pine trees, and cherry blossoms and flowing streams. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
