Original Yoshikazu (active circa 1850 - 1870) Japanese Woodblock Print
Battle at Night, 1866

Comments - Terrific scene of a battle taking place at night under the pine trees in the mountains. In the center, warriors on horseback gallop along, facing samurai on foot wielding spears. At left, two men locked in combat tumble down the steep slope of a hill, each grimacing fiercely with eyes bulging. At right, a samurai offers a dripping helmet filled with water to a general of the Asano clan on a black horse, who takes it with a solemn frown, his spear leaning against his shoulder. A great image with wonderful color and detail, in an atmospheric setting under a dark night sky.

Artist - Yoshikazu (active circa 1850 - 1870)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few small holes, slight thinning at edge, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and stains. Slight paper remnants in margins from previous triptych attachment. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
