Series; A Mirror of Strange Tales from China and Japan, 1880

Shin Shobu; Tobu Ribu - Great design from a rarely seen Yoshitoshi series depicting unusual tales from China and Japan. The upper design show the Chinese General Shin Shobu next to an elephant, leaning forward aggressively with his bow in hand. He wears a red tunic over an elegant suit of armor, and blue pants tucked into tall leather boots. The scene below depicts Chinese general Tobu Ribu confronting a demon in the guise of a woman, grabbing her by her scrawny wrist. The demon has long hair flowing over her back which is covered with fur and has wings. A crescent moon glows in the night sky above the shore. A rare uncut page with two chuban designs, with an intriguing depiction of an elephant and a supernatural creature.
