Camellia and Crescent Moon at the Kabukiza, 1897

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of an elderly woman standing in a rushing river clutching a baby to her chest beneath her kimono, a knife clenched between her teeth. With her other hand she lifts part of a wooden sluice gate, the water swiftly running past her and sending up white foam around her waist. Her wet gray hair streams over her shoulders as she looks up with a distraught expression. On the embankment at left, a couple dressed in elegant tunics watches, raising their hands in alarm. The man at left represents a turtle, while the beauty beside him symbolizes a crane. From left, the actors are Ichikawa [?] II, Ichikawa Somegoro IV, and Ichikawa Danjuro IX. A dramatic scene with a bold composition.
