The Subscription List, 1869

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the popular play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho). Yoshitsune and his men try to sneak across the border disguised as yamabushi or mountain priests, but they are questioned by the aristocrat Togashi, who suspects them. To allay suspicions, Benkei produces a blank scroll and proceeds to read a fake list of people who have subscribed to the temple fund they are supposedly collecting for. Yoshitsune watches meekly at left as Benkei sweeps the scroll away from the prying eyes of Togashi at right. Beautifully detailed with embossing in the white pompoms on Benkei's sashes and the white kimono trim, and a burnished pattern on Togashi's black court cap. An interesting design with the large figures set against an unrolled scroll bordered with a dark blue violet background.
