Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Hashihime (The Lady at the Bridge)

Series; Heroic Comparisons for the Chapters of Genji, circa 1843

Heroic Comparisons for the Chapters of Genji - Fantastic design from a series pairing images of heroes with chapters from the famous novel "The Tale of Genji." This beloved tale has been the inspiration for countless woodblock prints. Instead of featuring scenes from the life of Prince Genji, here Kuniyoshi illustrates legendary warriors and events that fit appropriately with the chapter titles. A rarely seen series by Kuniyoshi in the unusual otanzakuban format. A great choice for a collector.

Hashihime (The Lady at the Bridge) - For the Hashihime chapter, which means Lady at the Bridge, Kuniyoshi shows the samurai Watanabe no Tsuna, one of Raiko's retainers, encountering a woman at the foot of Modori Bridge in Kyoto. The delicate young woman standing before him is actually a demon in disguise, and the warrior scowls down at her angrily. His muscled legs and arms are evidence of his strength, and he rides barefoot. An attractive composition with fine bokashi shading in the ground and night sky.
