Komatsu Attacked by Wolves, 1886

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of the beauty Komatsu being attacked by three wolves. The snarling animals rip at her clothing as she raises a knife above her head, trying to fend them off. In the center, a woman watches from the edge of the shore, tilting her chin up disdainfully, while the two men behind her seem absorbed in watching the cormorant fishermen in the boat at left, paying no attention to the poor Komatsu, who is left to face the vicious animals alone. Wonderfully detailed with embossing on Komatsu's white robe and fine bokashi shading in the water and sky. An unusual subject.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Horizontal and vertical folds. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
