Meeting on a Beach; Beauty and Young Girl - Terrific uncut Yoshitoshi woodblock print featuring two chuban size images from his rarely seen "A Mirror of Filial Piety in Japan" series. The top image shows a young samurai kneeling on the shore before a shaggy-haired older man sitting atop a jagged rock. A great wave curls over into white foam behind them as the wind, a line of birds in the sky echoing the shape. Below, a beauty directs a young girl to deliver a box with a note tied atop it, shooing her away with her hand. A large lamp stands on the floor beside her next to a writing set, and the folding screen behind them depicts a view of Mt. Fuji above the water. This Yoshitoshi series is not well documented, and this is the first time we've seen either of these subjects. A great choice for a collector.
