Series; Famous Views of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road

Four Stations: Okabe, Fujieda, Shimada, and Kanaya, circa 1835 - Interesting landscape print from Kuniyoshi's Tokaido Road series, with each print combining views of four different stations. In the foreground, travelers make their way up a hill towards Kanaya after crossing the Oi River at Shimada. A man in a striped green robe rides a horse, while another man follow behind with a bundle tied to a pole over his back. The steep hill of Fujieda is shown at right, framing the scene. The rooftops of a village appear below the hill at lower right, and the Oi River runs across the scene, dotted with very tiny travelers making the crossing. A handsome design from a rarely seen Kuniyoshi series.
