The Romance of the Three Kingdoms - Handsome woodblock book illustration from Katsushika Taito II's multi-volume series "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" (E-hon tsuzoku Sangokushi), published from 1841 to 1842. Written in the 14th century, the novel dramatizes the three warring kingdoms in China during the second and third centuries. A mix of history and legend, the story details the exploits of three powerful leaders as they struggle against each other. Subjects range from action-packed views of warriors in the midst of battle to quiet scenes of noblemen in private quarters. A student of Hokusai, Katsushika Taito II's style is similar to that of his master, with beautiful draftsmanship and expressive figures. These designs feature terrific settings and wonderful detail. A great look at this popular drama.
