Comments - Fantastic scene of the famous ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi standing on a stone terrace overlooking the ocean. During a severe drought affecting all of Japan, the emperor asked her to pray for rain. She is shown standing behind a low altar with an oil lamp and incense burner, her robes flying about her as she recites a poem. She holds a fan in front of her face, the streamers blowing in the wind, an attendant shielding her with an umbrella. The sky begins to darken and the wind whips up the waves as a storm approaches in response to her prayers. A dramatic composition with the large figure dominating the image, beautifully detailed. A fantastic interpretation of this classic tale and a rare design by Kuniyoshi.
