Original Takeuchi Keishu (1861-1942) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nurse Kuchi-e Print, 1904

The Kuchi-e Tradition - Kuchi-e prints are woodblock frontispiece illustrations used in the publication of Japanese novels and magazines around the turn of the 20th century. Most kuchi-e prints were illustrations of bijin and continued the tradition of idealized beauties in Japanese art. The subjects, however, have a decidedly Meiji era feel about them and reflect the artistic movement towards more western design. Kuchi-e prints typically have one or two folds because of their use.

Much interest has been generated in the subject since the publication of Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada's book, "Woodblock Kuchi-e Prints: Reflections of Meiji Culture." Kuchi-e prints have become highly sought after and collected by the serious collector.

Comments - Attractive kuchi-e design of a young nurse in a white uniform and cap carefully watering a flower arrangement in a bright blue vase. A red cross appears on her cap and on the smokestack of the hospital ship shown in the background inset, steaming through choppy waves. The vase and tablecloth are softly shaded to add a sense of depth. Nicely detailed with metallic silver pigment on the pitcher and the watch pinned to the beauty's chest. A handsome image for the novel "Nurse" (Kangofu). This image appears on page 170 in Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada's book, "Woodblock Kuchi-e Prints: Reflections of Meiji Culture."

Artist - Takeuchi Keishu (1861-1942)

Image Size - 11 1/4" x 8 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two folds. Tape remnants on reverse at top corners from previous mounting. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
