A Japanese Print Collector and Monet - The great French impressionist Claude Monet was passionate about Japanese woodblock prints, and owned an impressive collection of mainly Edo era prints. We recently acquired an interesting group of woodblock prints from a collector who decided on an unusual theme: to collect the same subjects as those in Monet's personal collection. While these prints were not owned by Monet, it's interesting to see some of the designs that the artist admired and was influenced by. A quirky and unusual provenance for this intriguing group of Japanese woodblocks.
Comments - Interesting Yokohama-e design of two Portuguese women inside the residence of a foreign merchant. The woman at left wears an intricately patterned crocheted shawl trimmed with fringe over a dress with a full hoop skirt, and a large flat hat edged with a black ruffle. Her companion is similarly dressed, and has a sheer veil hanging from the edge of her hat. At left, a bowl of fruit on a table is visible through a glass window. An especially nice Yokohama print, with wonderful detail. We've never seen this subject before.
