In the Kiso Mountains in the 1180s, the Four Heavenly Kings Defeat the White Ape, 1853

Comments - Intriguing scene of the "Four Heavenly Kings" or "Shitenno" hunting for a white ape in the Kiso Mountains. The "Shitenno" were four loyal retainers of the great Minamoto no Yoritomo (Raiko). At right, one of the samurai takes the lead as they approach a dark cave behind a waterfall. He balances on a craggy pine root in mid-air, gripping a branch with one hand and his sword with the other as he looks down. Another warrior follows behind with a flaming torch while Yorimitsu watches from upper left, wearing a red tunic with the Minamoto paulownia symbol over yellow pants. A dramatic design.
