Yamashiro, Flowers of Gojozaka, Kagekiyo and Akoya, No. 33 - Wonderful scene of the beautiful young Akoya saying goodbye to her beloved, Taira no Kagekiyo. A licensed courtesan of the Kyoto quarters known as Gojozaka, she stands in the doorway dressed in a lovely kimono patterned with waves. Her young attendant looks up at Kagekiyo as he takes his leave under a blossoming cherry tree. The inset above shows Kagekiyo being captured at the Battle of Dan-no-ura. A beautifully drawn night scene, with a fine burnished check pattern in the black kimono fabric.
