Saijo Kunihira Attacking Yoritomo in Mutsu Province, 1856

Comments - Dramatic scene of the warrior Saijo Kunihira attacking Minamoto no Yoritomo during Yoritomo's punitive expedition to Mutsu Province in 1189. In the center, a brave Minamoto retainer rushes forward with his sword raised, startling Kunihira's black horse. The attacker clings to his mount as the horse rears on its back legs, gripping a large iron club in his hand. At right, Yoritomo glares sternly at his adversary from astride a brown horse, dressed in a fine suit of armor and a battle helmet topped with a dragon. A few fallen samurai lie wounded and bleeding on the ground at left as other soldiers raise their spears at the enemy. Several of the samurai are identified with name cartouches. A terrific image with wonderful detail in the armor and expressive faces. A handsome design with beautiful color and condition.
