47 Ronin, Act 4: Hangan’s Mansion

Series; Matched Pictures for The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers, 1859

Matched Pictures for The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers - Charming design from Toyokuni III's series pairing beauties with the acts of the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," the famous drama about the 47 ronin. Each print features two beauties engaged in everyday activities paralleling those in the play act represented. A circular inset in the top corner shows an actual scene from the play, along with the number of the act. These attractive images are nicely colored and detailed, and some feature embossing in the white kimono trim or fine bokashi shading in the background. We rarely see prints from this series. An interesting format for a bijin series.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown
