Gekkotei Bokusen - Nagoya samurai and artist Gekkotei Bokusen was a student of Hokusai, and was both a painter and printmaker. Along with a fellow student, Bokusen edited or proofed Hokusai's fantastic 15 volume "Manga" series, and he is best known for this collaboration. Bokusen's own works are rarely seen, however. We are excited to offer a complete volume of Bokusen's "Various Dreamings by Bokusen: A Study in Truthful Painting" (Bokusen soga shashin gakuhitsu).
This Complete Volume - Published in Nagoya in 1815, Bokusen's "Various Dreamings by Bokusen: A Study in Truthful Painting" follows a similar format to Hokusai's manga. Each page features multiple small figures engaged in a variety of activities. The book contains a total of 57 single pages of woodblock prints, with subjects ranging from horsemanship and martial arts practice to men and women of all classes working and relaxing in everyday life. It has a paper cover with traditional stab binding, and a couple pages of front and back matter. A great collection of images depicting life in old Edo. We've never before offered work by Bokusen.
