Fashionable Eastern Genji, 1854

Comments - Lovely triptych depicting the arrival of a young bride at Prince Genji's palace. She smiles shyly as an attendant takes her by the hand to help her from the palanquin, dressed in a delicately embossed pink kimono. Other women kneel respectfully, looking up with eager smiles, several lanterns flickering on the floor nearby. The nobleman waits patiently at left, a sword bearer at his side holding his weapon upright. Fantastic detail in the elegant palanquin and interior furnishings, which include a folding screen patterned with plum blossoms at left and sliding panels with cranes and pines. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
