Prince Genji and Abalone Divers at Futami-ga-ura, 1857

Comments - Fantastic scene of Prince Genji and his attendants visiting abalone divers at Futami-ga-ura, with a magnificent view of the famous Wedded Rocks. The young nobleman stands at right, smiling with amusement as he watches a woman chasing after an octopus. At left, an awabe diver emerges from the undulating surf holding an abalone shell. Her fellow diver wrings out her skirt, water pouring onto the rocky ledge below as she twists the cloth with both hands, a knife caught between her teeth. A pine tree frames the ocean at right as a flock of birds takes flight. A terrific design with beautiful detail and a lovely setting.
