Gathering of the Faithful Samurai, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Great four-panel group portrait of the 47 Ronin gathering before the final assault on Lord Moronao's castle. Each wears the traditional black and white dogtooth bordered robe associated with the ronin. The leader Yuranosuke sits on a folding stool in third panel from the left, waving a tasseled command baton, the cape of his battle helmet patterned with the inverted comma mon or crest of his clan. A samurai at far right carries a ladder, while another rests an enormous wooden mallet against his shoulder. Other warriors test their weapons or tighten helmet straps or sashes. A great image from this legendary tale, nicely detailed. A handsome subject for a collector interested in the great story of honor and revenge.

Artist - Sadahide (1807 - 1873)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 36 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Four separate panels, backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
