Sumo Wrestler Tanikaze and Naniwaya Okita

A Special 1938 Takamizawa Group - Founded in 1911, the Takamizawa Publisher of Tokyo has published some of the finest reprints of classic ukiyo-e designs. Drawing on the traditions and methods of the Edo era, the company produced reprints with the utmost care and great attention to detail, masterfully reproducing color, line work and even wood grain detail. Published in 1938, this handsome reprint group features designs by master artists such as Utamaro, Kiyonaga, Eishi, Hokusai, Hiroshige, Sharaku, and others. Each features a Takamizawa publisher seal on the  reverse. A great opportunity to acquire a high quality reprint of a famous Edo era subject.

Comments - Handsome double portrait of the beautiful waitress Okita of the Naniwaya Teahouse and the famous sumo wrestler Tanikaze. He clutches a fan as he looks down at her, his enormous size dwarfing the beauty's delicate features. Her hair is pulled back into a sleek bun with wings at the side, adorned with a large comb and a few slender hairpins. Wonderful fine line work in the hair. An unusual subject, rarely seen in reprint.

Artist - Shuncho (active circa 1780 - 1795)

Image Size - 15 1/8" x 10" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Light toning, small crease at edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
