Empress Komyo Washing the Buddha Disguised as a Beggar, 1881

Heroic Women - Handsome design from a rare 1881 series by Kunichika depicting women famous for their bravery and faithfulness. These chuban format scenes depict beauties from different time periods and walks of life, from courtesans and noblewomen to an empress. Each is shown demonstrating her loyalty and courage in scenes ranging from attacking an enemy to protecting family or taking pride in fulfilling a duty. Nicely detailed with fine line work and attractive settings. A few designs have embossing. We have never offered subjects from this series before, and have been unable to locate other copies. A rare and interesting series.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Slight soiling, a couple light creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
