Lord Shihei and Samurai Triplets, 1889

Comments - Fantastic scene from the kabuki play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami," which features three samurai triplets named Matsuomaru (Pine), Umeomaru (Plum), and Sakuramaru (Cherry). The brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the treacherous downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's employer, Shihei. Here, Matsuomaru guards his master's carriage as his two brothers confront him. A furious Shihei rages from on top of a cart, waving his staff of office as Sakuramaru holds a broken shaft from the cart. A lively and colorful image with a bold composition and large expressive figures set off by a deep blue sky. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro V, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Ichikawa Sadanji I, and Nakamura Shikan IV. Includes burnishing in the black lacquer cart wheel and shafts.
