Widow Eavesdropping, 1874

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the widow Osaki standing at a doorway, pausing to eavesdrop on the conversation inside. Frowning, she looks suspiciously out of the corners of her eyes at Nozarashi Gosuke inside, who grimaces angrily as he pushes up the sleeve of his boldly patterned dark purple kimono. He grips an ornate pipe in his other hand, his thinning hair pulled back into a slender topknot with a few loose wisps framing his face. The wooden grid of the window behind him adds graphic interest. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo and Onoe Kikugoro. Nice large figures set off by a deep red background.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 18 5/8"
