Ceremony on the Occasion of the Meiji Emperor's Silver Wedding Anniversary, 1894

Comments - Handsome depiction of a ceremony celebrating the Silver Wedding Anniversary of the Meiji Emperor and Empress. The royal couple sits on a platform behind a table covered with a red fringed cloth, the emperor in a military uniform and the empress wearing the latest European fashions. At left, a dignitary reads a proclamation, while at right, a pair of identically dressed girls carry in a tray with graduated sake cups and a long-handled sake server. In the center of the floor, a low table holds an auspicious arrangement of pine, plum, and bamboo, along with figures of the elderly couple Jo and Uba, symbolizing fidelity and marital happiness, and a turtle with moss growing from its shell, denoting longevity. Nicely detailed. An interesting depiction of this historic event.

Artist - Nobukazu (1874 - 1944)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 5/8" + top margin as shown
