Yamato shimbun - Terrific image from a series that Yoshitoshi did as a supplement to the Yamato shimbun daily newspaper in the mid- to late-1880s. Yoshitoshi did illustrations of popular figures of the day for Yamato shimbun, similar to his work for the Postal News a decade earlier, but more restrained. He created portraits of men and women from the Meiji era, some of them heroes captured in quiet moments, and others hinting at tragedy and violence, each with a decorative border and text panel. This intriguing series is quite rare. These woodblocks would make a fantastic addition to any Yoshitoshi collection. This design includes delicate cloth embossing in the text panel.
