Comments - Intriguing scene of ladies-in-waiting performing the "harukoma odori" or spring horse dance, a traditional entertainment for the New Year, for the Meiji Emperor and Empress. Dressed in diagonally striped kimono, each woman holds a horse puppet on stick, striking a pose with the puppet in her outstretched hand. The empress sits at upper right, holding a folding fan, while the emperor appears at top center in a military uniform. A seated princess watches at left, tilting her head with a dreamy expression. Dignitaries sit in a room behind her that overlooks a pond with carping leaping above a splashing fountain. An interesting subject, beautifully detailed with burnishing in the black kimono and obi, and faint embossing in the white kimono trim. We've never before offered this subject.
