Comments - Terrific comic triptych by Yoshitoshi featuring the Seven Lucky Gods enjoying an evening of entertainment to welcome the New Year. Fukurokuju's enormous elongated head has been transformed into a scarecrow with the addition of a hat and coat and a painted face, a spear serving as the figure's arms. In the center Hotei laughs and points at him, and at right the armored Bishamonten has fallen asleep on Daikoku's magic bag of treasure that never empties. A large red sake cup on the floor suggests he has had too much to drink. A fantastic piece illustrating the human qualities of these favorite gods, done with wit and wonderful calligraphic line work. Includes delicate allover cloth embossing in the background. A great Yoshitoshi subject.
