Official and Magistrate, 1875

Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait of Bando Hikosaburo V as the samurai official Ooka Echizen-no-Kami Tadasuke at top and Nakamura Shikan IV as the magistrate Matsudaira Izu-no-Kami. The men are involved in a case trying to determine whether the young man Ten'ichibo is actually the illegitimate son of the Shogun based on a sword and document in his possession. Scowling angrily as he stares suspiciously to the side, Ooka maintains that the man is an imposter, while staring ahead with a tight-lipped frown, Matsudaira believes the young man is telling the truth. Nice expressive figures detailed with fine line work in the hair.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 9 1/4" + left margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Slight soiling and rubbing, a few small spots and creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
