Twelve Continuous Acts of The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers, a Primer, 1860

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych featuring three acts from the famous play about the 47 ronin, the "Kanadehon Chushingura." At right in Act 7, Yuranosuke is angry to find the courtesan Okaru using a mirror to spy on him as he reads a secret message about the vendetta. Below the floorboards, one of Moronao's spies has torn off part of the letter, looking up with a frightened grimace. In Act 8 at top center, Tonase and her daughter, Konami, travel on the bridal journey to Yuranosuke's country house in Yamashina, the snow-covered peak of Mt. Fuji dominating the horizon. In act 9 at left, Tonase's husband Honzo appears at Yuranosuke's house, frowning unhappily because the groom's mother, Oishi, has rejected the bride, believing that Honzo had contributed to Lord Hangan's death by trying to bribe Moronao. The groom, Rikiya, watches sadly from the doorway of the next room. A handsome design nicely weaving together three scenes from this famous place.
