Ichikawa Sadanji I as Marubashi Chuya, 1902

Comments - Bold kabuki design featuring two large figures separated by differently shaded backgrounds. At left, Ichikawa Sadanji I plays Marubashi Chuya, a 17th century ronin and military strategist who took part in the Keian Uprising attempt to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate. Kneeling on the edge of a well, he drinks from a wooden bucket, water spilling over his chin as he grips sword. He wears a blue cotton summer robe, tied loosely about his waist, his hair rather disheveled. Willow branches frame the evening sky overhead. At right, a samurai frowns angrily as he looks over his shoulder, holding an offering tray with a scroll on it in his outstretched hand. He wears a rust-colored kamishimo over a black kimono and a red under robe. A great image with large colorful figures.
