Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Martial Arts Practice, 1879

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych depicting two men practicing martial arts under the watchful eye of their master. The warrior at left brandishes a wooden practice sword above his head, his hair rather disheveled and face flushed with pink. His opponent eyes him calmly, balancing a long wooden pole tipped with a white ball between his hands. His black outer garment has been pushed down to the waist, revealing a blue under robe, the sleeves tied back with narrow cord. A tray holds three graduated size red lacquer sake cups on the floor nearby. The neutral background focuses all attention on the expressive figures. Nicely detailed with fine line work.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical fold at left edge of two panels. Slight soiling and offsetting. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
