Nakamura Fukusuke IV, 1888

Series; Tokyo Picturesque Newspaper

Nakamura Fukusuke IV, 1888 - Interesting portrait of the kabuki actor Nakamura Fukusuke IV bowing onstage, his hair cropped short in the latest Meiji style. An inset scene above depicts three beauties traveling, with a view of the snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji behind them. The text features a ghost story that was published for the first time in this edition of the "Tokyo Picturesque Newspaper," a tale that was later turned into the kabuki play known as "Kaidan Chibusa no Enoki." Illustrated newspapers became popular during the Meiji era, with many famous artists contributing woodblock prints designs for them. A handsome design, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black kimono and bands of an embossed basket weave pattern running horizontally across the background.
