Loyal Nursemaid and Heir, 1853

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Meiboku Sendai Hagi," based on the true story of the contested Date Clan succession in the 17th century. The loyal nursemaid Masaoka has been charged with protecting young Tsuruchiyo, the heir to the clan, who is in danger of being poisoned. To protect him, Masaoka has kept him in private quarters, preparing his food herself using only her tea ceremony implements. While she works, she looks anxiously over her shoulder at the young nobleman, who sits on a cushion alongside Masaoka's son, Senmatsu. Panels decorated with sparrows flying in a bamboo grove line the back of the room. Onoe Baiko IV as Masaoka, Iwai Kumejiro as Tsuruchiyo, and Ichikawa Anpei as Senmatsu. Nicely detailed and colored.
