View of the Glory of Abe Tadaaki in the Sumida River Flood

Comments - Fantastic scene of the daimyo Abe Tadaaki riding across the Sumida River in 1631 after a flood to measure the damage caused by it. Tadaaki is shown plunging through the deep water on a brown horse at left, his frightened horse straining at the bit as he urges it forward with his riding crop. Another warrior follows alongside him, clinging to his horse with one hand around the animal's neck. In the center, an elderly man yells and waves his folding fan, while at right, the samurai gathered around a rider on horseback seem alarmed by the men's actions. The churning waves seem an almost solid mass, giving the raging water a three-dimensional effect. A high-ranking government official, Tadaaki is remembered for his integrity and good sense. An intriguing and rarely seen Yoshitoshi subject.
