The Subscription List, 1852

Comments - Terrific scene illustrating the famous kabuki play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), which tells the story of how Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men attempt to sneak across the border disguised as yamabushi or mountain priests. The aristocrat Togashi Saemon, shown here in at right in formal court dress, is charged with intercepting the party. However, Togashi is suspicious of the young porter, who resembles Yoshitsune (and actually is). To prove otherwise, Yoshitsune's loyal retainer Benkei berates and abuses his lord and master. He thrusts his fan angrily as Yoshitsune kneels meekly at left. The background features panels depicting a bamboo grove. Great expressive faces and wonderful embossed detail in Benkei's white pants and Yoshitsune's blue robe. From left, the principle actors are Ichikawa Saruzo I as Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Ichikawa Ebizo V as Musashibo Benkei, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Togashi Saemon. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A very popular and much-loved kabuki subject.
