Hotei, God of Happiness

Series; Women Compared with the Seven Gods of Good Luck, circa 1847 - 1848

Hotei, God of Happiness - Lovely portrait from a rarely seen Kuniyoshi series pairing beauties with Japan's beloved Seven Lucky Gods. Here, a kneeling beauty represents Hotei, the God of Happiness, who appears on the hanging scroll at upper right. She smiles as she looks over her shoulder, holding her sleeve to her chin. She wears a light brown kimono patterned with flowers and leaves, tied with a black obi. At lower right, an oval dish holds two large bamboo shoots wrapped in paper, while a blue and white plate on the floor holds a fish, as does another atop a red lacquer tray. A charming design, detailed with soft bokashi shading in the background.
